In a new report for the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, SIPRI Research Coordinator Dr Ian Anthony and former SIPRI intern Johnny Janssen analyse the future of nuclear weapons in NATO.
 
According to the report, the passage of time has put the credibility of short-range nuclear forces in doubt. The national plans of nuclear weapon states, NATO enlargement, the retirement of many nuclear weapons and the ageing of nuclear-capable aircraft have challenged the stated rationale for maintaining US nuclear weapons in Europe: alliance solidarity and transatlantic reassurance.
